A deadly car accident on Alabama Highway 69 near Northport killed a Mississippi man on Monday, according to a Tuscaloosanews.com report. The two-vehicle accident might have claimed two more lives had it not been for the heroic actions of a passerby.

Paul Free noticed a Dodge pickup in flames as he drove by, and saw that another vehicle was on its side right beside it. Fearing that the second vehicle would soon catch fire, he flagged down another driver and the two of them pulled the driver and passenger from the Ford F-250. Both were pinned into the car by seat belts and airbags.

Free and the other passerby saved the two men’s lives, as fire spread to the Ford just after the men were pulled out. Both men who survived the accident were reported to be in critical condition. The motor vehicle accident was apparently a head-on collision, but is still being investigated.
